"Mokko gata shape with boars eyes at the corners. The design is powerful, and the iron is rich and strong. The openwork walls extending to the radiant field is chamfered and carefully built. All of this suggests that this guard dates to the Nambokcho Period, ca. 1300.
Many things about this guard agree completely with the aesthetic ideals of the way of the samurai: the masculine rim, the sense of fullness in the shape, and the dignity of the symmetrical pattern. All this contributes to a mood of elegance and antiquity." (Haynes & Long)
