"Yamagane tsuba dating ca. 1400 or earlier. In Tachi style mokko shape with raised rim. It has the look of age and dignity. The single hitsu-ana and the nakago-ana are made for Aikuchi mounted sword, not a tachi.
The word tachi-kanagushi means a maker of tachi fittings. The tachi-kanagushi tsuba is made through the collaboration of the two tachi fittings makers, the preparatory worker, called the tachi-shi, collects the material for the base plate, forms the shape and does the hammer work. The finishing of the surface and the decoration are the work of the tachi-kanagushi. Occasionally each of these artists would make tsuba independently of his co-worker. As seen here, the independant work of the tachi-shi displays a superior plate with limited decoration." (Haynes & Long)
