"Rounded corner square shape brass tsuba with takabori iroe hira zogan and uchikaeshi mimi. Mid-Edo period Dewa Province Akita.
Work of the Shoami school group in Akita was small and examples of their work are rare. This tsuba shows the best of their style. Spiders are revered as knowledgeable insects and are also favored for sword fittings. Ishikawa Shigesada was a metalworker of the Akita Shoami school and called Fujizaemon (Fujibei), and he studied under Goto Michinori and was good at the Goto-style high carved expression of shakudo fish, but this tsuba is a work consisting of the high-carved expression of the Shoami-ryu style, and the shakudo spider is impressively carved on a brass plate. The plate is made of thick brass and polished, and the rim is hammered down and struck back, giving the plate an inflection change. The spider makes its presence felt in the web that is of silver flat inlay, and the work as a whole is powerful.
Work of the Shoami school group in Akita was small and examples of their work is rare. This tsuba shows the best of their style." (Haynes & Long)
