'SHINTO GO TETSUREN
|
Provenance: Robert Haynes | Not For Sale |
"A tsuba made of sturdy, thick iron with Bodhidharma Daishi depicted with his mouth closed in a downward frown, revealing his stubborn, single-minded disposition to endure any hardship for the sake of spreading the teachings. However, the overall face and appearance are humorous. The udenuki for the strap to secure the wrist are probably a commandment against the unnecessarily drawn sword. The splendor of the iron, the reliable carving technique, and the use of crystals in the eyes of Dharma are perfect in every way. The artist, Myochin Munesuke, was a native of Azabu in Edo around the time of the Kyoho era. He was the head of the Myochin school and made tsuba along with armor. Haynes Index H 06238.0. Born 1641, Died 1724." (Haynes & Long) 8.50cm x 8.50cm x 0.58cm (face) x 0.55cm (rim) |
