KAMAKURA

Provenance: Elliott Long POR
"Design of Tomoe, star, flower and arabesque. Iron plate round shape sukishitabori round edge. Early Muromachi period. Comes with a certificate of authenticity for the sword fittings preserved as "Mumei Kamakura".

Kamakura tsuba were given this name around the Meiji period, not because they were made in the Kamakura period, but because they look similar to Kamakura carving. They are thought to have originated by adding carvings to swordsmith tsuba. Most of the designs are reminiscent of Kyoto scenery, such as five-story pagodas and landscapes, so it is likely that they originated in Kyoto. This tsuba is round, with openwork Tomoe and stars on both sides like old swordsmith tsuba, and flowers and arabesques on the flat ground are carved with suki-sage carving. It is also common for Kamakura tsuba to have the same design on both sides. The small handle is long and old, and there is a small edge around it, so it is clear that it is from the beginning. It has the atmosphere of a rare era, and the iron is well-preserved, making it a desirable tsuba that allows you to fully enjoy the pleasure of collecting old tsuba." (Haynes & Long)
