Futokoromono

Provenance:   Elliott D. Long $4000.00

"An elegant Futokoromono of kotsuka and kogai of shakudo nanako plates with gold, brass, silver, and shakudo fish motif that have not been seen before. They evoke the bustle and gaiety of the Edo fish markets at the time, and are thought to have suited the tastes of the samurai class. The nanako on the plates is tiny and precise and the fish are delicately made and in high relief. Each piece features a variety of fish, including sea bream, flounder, small fish, mackerel, and catfish. There are two fish on the kogai and one on the kozuka that appear to be of solid gold inlay. All of the fish are very delicate and wonderful. The flounder is inlaid with both silver and shakudo. These two works are free of scratches or defects, and express individuality, making them masterpieces worthy of being treasured.

The Yoshioka family was a prestigious family that served the Edo Shogunate for nine generations, receiving a stipend of 100 bales and ten people as craftsmen. Most of the early works were presented as gifts and did not have a signature engraved on them, and later works also did not have an individual signature engraved on them, but only inscribed "Yoshioka Inabanosuke."
