Provenance:    Robert E. Haynes Not For Sale

"Tsuba with snow ring and daffodils, Mid-Edo period, Hagi, Nagato Province.
Around the large, perfectly round face, delicate carvings are used to make snow circles appear in the shadows, and daffodils are drawn with gold and silver texture inlays. Although some of the inlay has fallen off, it still has an elegant appearance that gives a sense of free movement. Daffodils are also called snow flowers. It blooms dignifiedly even in the snow, giving off a refreshing fragrance. Because it withstands cold weather and produces beautiful flowers, it is also loved as a pattern that gives strength to overcome adversity. This piece use's nunome inlay, which is relatively rare for Choshu tsuba. The rim is also inlaid with nunome, giving it a gorgeous and bright look." (Haynes & Long)
