SHONAI SHOAMI | $700 |
"Iron mokko shape tsuba formed as four rabbits jumping over waves. The waves and eyes of the rabbits are carved in low relief. This design is to be found in the work of the Shonai Shoami school. There are examples in copper and shakudo plate with this same form. The soft metal examples are later than this rare iron work, and shows the early work of this school. The rabbit over waves theme represents the moon reflecting on water. In Japan this design comes from the Sandskrit word for 'moon', which means, "one who carries the hare"."
