"Genuine First Class Special Valuable Kozuka, 13th Head of the Goto Family "Goto Mitsutaka". Shakudo Nanako Ground Go Game Design High Carved Inlay Color Painting. ENJO MITSUTAKA: The eldest son of the 12th Head of the Goto Family, Jujo Mitsutada, he was born in 1722. In 1722, his father Mitsutada passed away, so Enjo Mitsutaka changed his name to Shirobei Mitsutaka and succeeded the 13th Head of the Family, taking the name Shirobei and the name Mitsutaka. He was the second longest serving head of the family after the 10th Renjo. Mitsutaka's style adhered to the traditions of the Goto family, and many of his works were inherited techniques. As you can see from the images, this masterpiece kozuka features a Go game design on a fine, finely textured Shakudo Nanako ground, which was the specialty of the Goto family, and is expressed with a high carved inlay color painting of superb workmanship. The Goto family served the Tokugawa Shogunate for generations, but the feudal lord during the time Goto Mitsutaka was active was the ninth shogun, Tokugawa Ieshige. It is a historical fact that Ieshige wrote a guidebook on Go, and given the range of work and the fact that this piece is unsigned, it may have been a gift made for the ninth shogun, Tokugawa Ieshige, who had an interest in Go. In any case, this is a masterpiece." (E. Long) |
